Simplify Your Calling Results

These tips are shared here to promote simplifying and improving how we serve in our church callings.

During the October 2007 Conference Dallin H. Oaks said, "Remember, don’t magnify the work to be done—simplify it.” In general conference last year, Elder M. Russell Ballard warned against the deterioration of family relationships that can result when we spend excess time on ineffective activities that yield little spiritual sustenance. To innovate does not necessarily mean to expand; very often it means to simplify."

One Ward Executive Secretary says, "Using a shared Google Calendar allows the Bishop to block out family time and other committments he has. We can both view the updated calendar. I enter the dates and times of interviews and bishopric, stake, and ward meetings. When I schedule appointments for the Bishop, he can see them in advance to pray about and receive revelation. Either of us can print the interview and meeting schedule or make changes if needed. This reduces the number of phone calls and appointment changes. He likes knowing his schedule before the morning of. I like protecting his family time. It simplifies my calling as Executive Secretary."

One Relief Society Secretary simplifies her calling by e-mailing the weekly Relief Society Bulletin.

BONUS: This helps Relief Society Sisters who have callings in other Auxiliaries stay up to date with Relief Society happenings and reduces waste.

Katie writes, "We were able to get the e-mail addresses from almost all the sisters in the ward. We only print about 30 hard copies on Sunday and e-mail the bulletin to the rest. I usually get phone calls or e-mails through the week to add anything to the bulletin. And then I send it on Saturday evening."

Here is how one stake helps their primary choristers simplify their callings. Each chorister makes multiple singing time helps for one of primary songs, then they swap them with each other. When primary choristers meet together during stake primary board meeting, each chorister choses 1 of the 8 new songs. Our stake has 8 wards, so each chorister developed the helps/game/visuals for the song they chose. After making 7 additional copies/packets, the choristers traded the song helps amongst themselves. No more straining your brain :) Remember we've been encouraged to use the helps/visuals given in the Friend Magazine, GAK and other church resources.
