2009 Primary Theme Helps & Ideas

I think this year's theme is so appropriate for today.

My Eternal Family

I am excited to use the Proclamation on the Family more this year and the two new songs are beautiful. This year's theme will help our children focus more on the family they have now and their future family. What a sweet message!

What is working great in your primary that you want to share with others?

  Nursery, too! Date: 11/03/2007
From: Teacher
I think we could even teach this year's theme to our nursery children, using the song, I am a child of God. The main scripture for the year makes me think of "the Most High". They might relate that to a crown they could wear and then take home.
True To The Faith, p. 74 Date: 12/02/2007
From: LDS Greats Editor
This quote from the True To The Faith book helps illuminate the 2008 primary theme. It is under the Topic God the Father, The Father of Our Spirits.

"One of life's great questions is "Who am I?" A beloved Primary song helps even little children answer this question. We sing, "I am a child of God, and he has sent me here." The knowledge that we are children of God provides strength, comfort, and hope.

You are a literal child of God, spiritually begotten in the premortal life. As His child, you can be assured that you have divine, eternal potential and that He will help you in your sincere efforts to reach that potential."

I love thinking about how my knowledge that I am a child of God provides strength, comfort, and hope. It is so true. The part about divine eternal potential reminds me of the Young Women value, Divine Nature. How wonderful to help the children at this early age better understand who they are and what they can become!

  Primary Chorister Helps Date: 11/30/2007
From: Susan
Our chorister will work on songs using this fun method. She has one child wear a funny hat and puts a word on the front without them seeing. She reminds the children singing to leave out that word in the song. Then the hat child tries to guess what the word is! She also uses the chalkboard. She chooses 4 children and tells them what picture to draw for a song. They silently draw for about 3 minutes and the kids were spell bound trying to figure it out. It was great!

Lesson #1 in the Primary Manual is called "I Am a Child of God". Here are some helpful quotes from that lesson book.

"...the most High means Heavenly Father. Emphasize that every person on the earth is a child of Heavenly Father.

Heavenly Father knows us and loves us. ...Heavenly Father is the father of our spirits, so we can grow to be like him.

Heavenly Father has important work for us to do.

...Explain that Heavenly Father is the king of heaven and earth. Because we are his children, we are princes and princesses. Make a simple crown for each child and write the words I am a child of God on each crown. Let the children color the crown."

You probably noticed this in your study also, but the premortal world in Preach My Gospel is called the Pre-Earth Life¯. I think it is helpful for children to know that pre means before and then I would explain both of these terms to help them understand. Mortal has to do with the physical body. Pre-Earth has to do with the where - telling us there was a place we lived before we were born on this earth.
  Primary Wall Idea Date: 01/09/2008
From: Heidy in California

We covered the wall in black paper and put a giant earth in the center. At the top we put the yearly scripture, "All of you are children of the most high". We surrounded the earth with stars on which we will write the children's names when they give talks. We may also add a picture of Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father looking down on the earth.

We are also planning to do our smaller wall with a giant rainbow with a picture of Jesus Christ and children underneath. We will put small clouds all around the rainbow with pictures of each child inside the clouds. A banner at the bottom of the picture of Jesus and the children will read, "I am a child of God". Purchase the vinyl scripture here.

You might use GAK picture #600 for the earth on your primary room wall, if you want something similar to the Primary Wall Idea above.

This is such a terrific idea, and looks great! We have been trying to figure out what to do with our walls. I am going to take this to our presidency and see what they think. I am so glad that we are able to share and find ideas from sisters all over the world!

We are serving on a mission out on the Navajo reservation at a place called Leupp. I am the primary president of 5 little boys and your ideas have really helped me in preparing sharing time each week. It is hard coming up with new ideas each week and any help is appreciated. Thank you for your most needed help and ideas. I am also the chorister and nursery leader and can't carry a tune, but we have a lot of fun with the ideas from your website.
