What is the best thing you do in your primary nursery? Nursery can be challenging for even the strong. Share your wisdom and experiences or read tips from others.
  Sunday Meeting Schedule Date: 11/03/2007
From: Nursery Leader
It was tough when our ward's nursery was during lunch time. We decided the children needed to eat real lunch instead of animal crackers, etc. We asked the parents to bring a sandwich or lunch item for the child. After sacrament meeting they came straight to nursery, washed their hands and sat down to eat their lunch. Our budget couldn't have afforded lunch and the parents packed what they knew their child would eat. The parents felt like their children were happier because they had real food not just a snack. This also helped them get through sacrament without eating, because they knew when they got to nursery they could eat their food. Bonus - some children, who didn't want to come to nursery, forgot they were unhappy when they began eating their lunch.
  Reusable Cups Date: 11/03/2007
From: Parent
The ward I am in uses dishwasher safe plastic cups with lids instead of the small paper cups that crush in your hand or tip over easily. Each week the nursery leader just takes them home to her dishwasher. There is less waste and spilling. The cups are different colors. I imagine this saves budget money. If you are artistic you could use permanent marker to draw simple pictures on the cups. The children don't have to ask for refills and the cups can be filled in advance of snack time, when you are short handed.

We use music in our nursery with the church nursery CD. We sometime sing along and dance. It is a wonderful way to bring the gospel to the little ones. We have carpet squares to sit on during our formal music time. It helps give everyone a place to be! We give our simple lesson during our snack time when everyone is especially attentive. Don't forget a prayer on the food before the snack. (You can use fans to help with air movement, if you have nursery smells!)

I printed an "I Am a Child of God" border from theideadoor.com to put above the chair railing and made a quilt with the childrens' handprints and names to put on the floor for singing time and story time. We have a CD with primary songs playing as they come in. We want them to to feel the spirit as they come in and want the room to be inviting. Nursery is not just babysitting, you are preparing these little ones for primary. You may only get them to listen to a minute or two of the lesson, but it is a very important calling.....
