How have you felt inspired to simplify your calling? Has it blessed those you serve at church and home both? How and why did it come to pass?

Using a shared Google Calendar allows the Bishop to block out family time and other commitments he has. We can both view the updated calendar. I enter the dates and times of interviews and bishopric, stake, and ward meetings. When I schedule appointments for the Bishop, he can see them in advance to pray about and receive revelation. Either of us can print the interview and meeting schedule or make changes if needed. This reduces the number of phone calls and appointment changes. He likes knowing his schedule before the morning of. I like protecting his family time. It simplifies my calling as Executive Secretary.

As YW President, I have assigned the Beehives to be in charge of New Beginnings, the Mia Maids have Standards Night, and the Laurels have Y.W.I.E. This way, any girl who needs to pass off a value goal or project has ample opportunity, and the girls build stronger relationships with each other.

Our ward organized into committees based on locations/neighborhoods each with a specific task. For our Christmas party one street did setup, another did cleanup, one street did the program, and another street served the dinner and planned activities while you waited at your table. One person or couple on each street coordinated their committee - who were also their neighbors.

Just trust in the power of the scriptures to teach them. As I've prepared lessons, I've often felt inspired to trust only in God's word to excite them and draw them in. School teachers talk about discovery learning. That is what you get (discovery learning) when you start in the topical guide, then search the scriptures, and discuss what you are discovering on the topic. As you go through the different passages, have them write a keyword for every reference or write the keyword on the board. Then at the end of the lesson you have a summary right there and you can testify specifically or ask the one of them to share their testimony about what they learned today.

I've watched our ward's gospel doctrine teacher do a few things that I want to try. One of them is to divide the class into thirds (adapt it for a small class, but I think it would still be effective.) and assign every section (two people) a different scripture to read, discuss, and share with the rest of the class. The key is giving them a specific question they are trying to answer before they begin reading (like: What does this teach you about God the Father?) and also a question that deals with how this could apply to them or help them understand Heavenly Father's Plan. Give them 3 minutes or so to read aloud to each other, discuss and think about their scripture verses. Then go through the groups (pairs) and have them (or one of the large group) report and answer the two questions. I always feel personally involved in the learning and I feel the spirit teaching me, when he employs this method.

| I've been to LDS.org a lot, but just came upon this page. It has easy activities that are great. They build skills while having fun and strengthen home and family. Beyond family night, many of these activities could be used at activity days, cub scouts, mutual,
auxiliary board meetings... the list goes on. Home & Family - Family Activities at lds.org Even the ideas under the category of Learning Activities are fun and would be great to do for FHE, and could be added to babysitting bags!
Use this as a resource when your idea falls through or you want to focus on strengthening home and family. Some YW groups do a family strengthening activity monthly. How great to have the learners bring the home and family strengthening activity/idea to teach each other! |

Find out what your meeting house library has available. If it came from there, it is definitely church approved. This is a great way to add variety to your lessons without having to buy and store pictures, audio or video (dvd) for yourself. You can use more of the senses when you teach (eyes, ears) so they are more likely to remember and also give the students a break from your own voice. Clips from modern prophets give lessons an added emphasis.

Often by becoming involved in service we are helped with our own challenges. As a Compassionate Service Leader in a college ward I was asked to help assist those sisters in the Relief Society who were having struggles. I worked using the Visiting Teaching system to help meet the individual needs, but in the process of doing so, the strong impression came to my mind that if I could help involve the sisters in service and help them forget themselves -that ultimately, it would do the greatest good in meeting the needs of the sisters. I then started also working with the service leaders to encourage more serving projects, etc. -it worked!
