Thanks, Joyce! Hopefully this will give many some ideas for the primary program and provide the boost you need to write your primary's sacrament meeting program.
Music in your Primary Classroom -
Especially for the younger primary children, a song is perfect when you see you are losing their attention. If they seem tired or uninterested, a song will perk them up in the same way the chorister uses a song to get the wiggles out. You can start the song then leave out a word as though you forgot it, and they will fill in the blank and then start singing with you or have them name that tune.
Use music to help them make transitions. Every time they hear the song... they fold their arms to pray. Have a song to sing that reminds them of reverence. Music soothes the soul and calms people, especially primary/church music.
Use music at the end of your lesson to reinforce the message or just to fill in a few extra moments. A song could introduce the lesson. Let the children guess what you will be learning that day. If you have a coloring/cutting activity or craft, play music softly in the background. Sometimes a larger class is assigned to sing one of the songs for the sacrament program and to practice during their class time.
Just keep a few CD players, song books, and primary music cds in your primary closet for any teacher to grab on the way to class. Make it convenient and easy. Have five or so of the small primary song books for the older children who can read. Primary music brings the spirit. I love the song "Did Jesus Really Live Again?" and it would be so perfect for an Easter lesson to show pictures of the resurrection while you listen or sing.
